Why sailing yachting is great for families?

Sailing is nowadays one of the most popular sports and leisure activities in the world. This is the case because sailing combines the love of the sea with the love of adventure. Many people, even those who do not live near the sea, start more and more to appreciate this sport; and one of the reasons is because sailing gives a sense of exploring a very wild element of nature, the deep blue sea waters. Sailing serves another important purpose besides the fun, leisure and adventurousness it provides; it creates a certain bonding between the people who share this experience.

There is a certain sense of accomplishment and pride when you are starting learning something new and more so something quite tricky that it takes a lot of effort as sailing. When this sense of accomplishment is being shared with the ones you love, like your family, the accomplishment feels ten times bigger! This also happens when you experience unique experiences together which you remember for life.

Families, who sail together, stay together

Like a lot of leisure activities, sailing requires a lot of teamwork. When you sail with your kids, they are trained directly how to manage responsibilities and to carry on practical activities in that exact moment. Your family can collaborate on hoisting the mainsail together, sheet the jib, and put everything away at the end of the day. Ηart reading, navigation, sail work, steering, radio operation, weather forecasting, rope work even diving are just some of the many activities you and your family can share.  Sailing generally teaches not only how to sail and carry your way into the sea but it also teaches cooperation, teamwork, divvying up responsibilities or even how to solve unanticipated problems. Sailing isn’t just about the mechanics; it’s about solidifying life skills that will bring your family together.

The opportunities are endless

Sailing offers various opportunities to enjoy the ride. Kids generally love sailing but let’s take an in depth look on the five most important advantages for family sailing:

  • Teaching patience and Perspective

Sailing requires for the crew a certain amount of collaboration and therefore patience, in order for the trip to be successful. While sailing, a lot of activities require communication and mutual and quick understanding for things to work out. Frustration may occur, but children will learn in this way the power of teamwork after every trip.

  • Independence and Responsibility

Sailing as a family and with kids, creates an incredible opportunity for you and your kids to feel independent and how to count on each other.  Kids learn an alternative way of learning of right and wrong which now is not the parental figure but the boat itself. This has as an outcome a growth of confidence in their abilities as well as their sense of independence.

  • Stronger bonds

As we said earlier, sailing creates a sense of collaboration within the family. And by collaborating, the family ties grow even stronger. Parents get to know children and children get to know their parents through handling of affairs and generally by existing together in such a situation that demands strength, courage and problem-solving skills.

  • Valuable life lessons

Sailing is pretty much a way to know how to survive in the open sea waters. When you are exposed in such an eye-opening experience at such a young age the valuable lessons that are being taught are numerous. While on-board, you are literally facing a quite sensitive situation that needs constant action in order to be successful. While sailing, ask your kids several questions to get them really in touch with the philosophy of sailing but always while making it a fun experience. For example: you can implement fun games to play on-board or learn the basics of sailing in a humorous way.

  • Creating Habits

In order for a trip to be successful, the formation of habits is simply mandatory. With sailing, you get the opportunity to instill valuable habits in kids that might not be so easy to cement in other ways. To have them doing things like coiling lines or putting things away is a non-authoritative way to teach your children the power of habit.
